This summer, I interned at My Carolina Alumni Association as a Marketing and Sales Assistant. Going into this summer, I had no idea what to expect. This was my first time as an intern, but I was excited to see what working in an office was like and meet my new coworkers. Looking back now, I can say that this experience has helped me learn new things about myself, grow as a professional, and see a new side of UofSC. Here are 7 things I learned from my summer internship:
Flexibility is key when it comes to any job, but it’s especially important with internships. Coming into a new job, you should always be prepared for doing things that might be a little outside the job description. Sometimes, the most fun moments are the ones you never expected!
Every Day is a New Day
No matter what happens the day before, sometimes it’s best to leave it in the past. Whether yesterday was an incredible day, or a not-so-great day, today is a new day. This summer I’ve been able to make the most out of my internship by coming into each day with optimism and a clean slate.
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
A team can accomplish more than you could ever do on your own. This is something I’ve learned so quickly this summer. If you work with a team, take advantage of it and know that you don’t have to do things on your own!
Attitude is Everything
A positive attitude can turn any situation around. I’ve learned that even if you’re doing a task that isn’t the most exciting, you can always make it better by changing your attitude. Being negative only makes the days longer, so it’s important to make the best of things.
Everyone Has a Gift
One of the great things about my internship is my coworkers! Each person on our team has different strengths, and we’ve all learned how to work together and help each other shine. Remember, everyone has a gift and it makes work so much better when you can let everyone use theirs.
Always Be Prepared
Preparation is a must! Sometimes there are big things to be prepared for, like a big project or meeting. But other times, preparation is as simple as making sure to pack a granola bar. Whatever it is, being prepared is a must!
Have Fun With It!
And most importantly...try to make it fun! This is a new experience and a chance to meet new people, learn outside of the classroom, and do something interesting with your summer. If you use your internship as a time to grow personally and professionally, you will definitely make the most of it! Internships are like snapshots into what life can be like after graduation, and they’re perfect practice for your future career. Don’t forget to ask questions and have fun!
